Genitive case (ilik septik) of nouns in the Kazakh language, the description and examples

Genitive case (ilik septik) answers the questions kimniń? kimderdiń? (whose?), neniń? nelerdiń? (what?) and is used to show belonging.

Qazaq English Question
Aman-nyń kita-by the book of Aman kimniń?
bala-nyń dob-y boy’s ball kimniń?
kolhoz-dyń ferma-sy collective farm neniń?
ózen-niń sý-lar river water neniń?

Genitive case (ilik septik) has the endings: -nyń (-niń), -dyń, (-diń), -tyń (-tiń).

The word ends with Example Affix
  • vowel -a, -á, -e, -ı, -ý, -y, -i
  • sonorous consonant -m, -n, -ń
Sáýle-niń palto-sy (Saule’s coat).
Natasha-nyń etig-i (Natasha’s boots).

  • sonorous consonant -l, -r, -ý
  • voiced consonant -j, -z
Asqar-dyń úı-i (Askar’s house).
Kúz-diń orta-sy (mid-autumn).
-dyń (-diń)
  • voiceless consonant -k, -q, -p, -s, -t, -sh
  • voiced consonants -b, -v, -g, -ǵ, -d

Ivanov-tyń kita-by (Ivanov’s book).
-tyń (-tin)

Nouns in the genitive case (ilik septik) in the proposal are the definition (anyqtaýysh) and stand before the modified word (anyqtaıtyn sózdiń altyna). The defined word is used the possessive form. The defined word acquires the 3rd person affix  -y/-i, -sy/-si.

When writing dates, the affix of the genitive case is added to the month name, and the possessive affix for the number:
